The Chemical industry

The chemical industry is devoted to the extraction and processing of both natural and synthetic raw materials, as well as to turning them into substances whose characteristics differ from those they originally had in order to meet people's needs by improving their quality of life. Its main goal is to manufacture a good quality product at the lowest possible cost by causing the least possible damage to the environment. Raw materials correspond to various natural materials, which are extracted to produce consumer goods. These materials may be classified according to their origin: animal materials, plant materials and mineral materials.

There are two kinds of chemical industries:

Basic chemical industry: basic raw materials are used and intermediate products (which may serve as raw material for other industries) are produced.

Transformation chemical industries: they are oriented to people´s direct consumption, they use products manufactured by basic chemical industries. Fine chemistry comprises several specialized industries (pharmaceutical, fertilizers, pesticides, coloring agents, etc.)

Basic Industry requirements

Raw materials may be of mineral or non-mineral origin. Mineral ones may be metal-bearing or non-metal-bearing materials, but both types are exhaustible. Non-mineral materials may be of animal or plant origin but, in both cases, their production is controlled by people.

Energy sources may be alternative or those that are mainly used today which come from non-renewable sources. Alternative sources are renewable (hydraulic energy, solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, and tidal power). Besides, they do not pollute the environment. However, there is one exception among these alternative sources: biomass, which - contrary to what happens to the rest - does pollute the environment. Today´s most highly consumed sources are non-renewable ones (gas, oil, coal). These elements are pollutants and are involved in the production of nuclear energy.

Chemical industries of interest

Major chemical industries producing inorganic products are those devoted to the production of sulfuric acid, glass, aluminum, copper, iron, and steel; ammoniac and nitrogen fertilizers, and soda ash, among others. Major chemical industries producing organic products include: coal-chemical industry, whose raw material is coal, the petrochemical industry, whose raw material is oil, and derived industries such as the plastics industry, synthetic resin industry, and detergent industry.

Applications and extraction

The chemical industry uses basic raw materials such as oil, gas, air, water and minerals to produce basic materials which are, in turn, used to manufacture more specialized products. Many of these final products may be used for manufacturing other products such as electrical appliances. That is to say, the CI has been manufacturing varied, highly innovative products which have greatly contributed to shape our civilization.

a) -Bulk products: gases, salts, petrochemicals, benzene, ethylene, propylene, xylene, toluene, butadiene, metane, butylene.

b)- Fertilizers, industrial chemistry, plastic products, peroxyacid, resins, elastomers, fibers and coloring agents.

c)- Body care: soap, detergent, whitening products, hair & skin products, fragrances.

d)-Pharmaceutical, agro-chemical, bio-technology.

e)-Textile, automobile, glass, paper, metal.

Sulfur dioxide is used as a selective agent when fermentation begins.
